A House On A Hill

The first time I was asked what work I wanted to do was at the age of eleven. The person asking seemed to be testing me. I wanted to make music, I wanted to paint, I wanted to write poetry and stories, but I knew any one of these answers would likely result in disapproval.

"I would like to be an architect" I said, paying close attention to their reaction. Designing buildings requires an understanding of engineering and physics which I enjoyed, and even as a child I knew architects made a good income... "An architect? ... Good" came the reply.

I knew shortly after I would never be an architect as their first responsibility is practical: a building must function well as a place to host people and objects, and this comes before anything else. My passion has always been to create art, and I didn't regard architecture as art, despite its beauty, but it would take me a long while before I felt confident enough to state this.

Architecture is constrained by its utility, whereas art's first purpose is to reveal. This artwork makes known my love of composition, nature, and the many, magical structures that rise from the rocky landscape of my everyday.
