A Tower of Bable

A Tower of Bable

A Tower of Bable

The vast edifice of bricks that make up the Bankside Power Station Tower designed by Giles Gilbert Scott which was converted to be the home of Tate Modern. The power station generated electricity from 1952 to 1981.

I have named this work A Tower of Bable as much of the artwork presented at Tate Modern is as if in a foreign language unknown to all. I have often visited this place which reminds me of The Emperor's New Clothes with its pretence and urban assertion of enlightenment. There is art of great beauty here, yet so much of little consequence. The tower is impenetrable, impressive, dislocating, and ultimately fails to charm or engage - much like many of the artworks within...
