The Thread and Reach of Life

Thin spider threads stretch in the still light of morning. Voice and song spread along the networks of countless strands that connect us, one to the other, from within the rivers of thought and feeling that shape one living thing to the next...

Vague bright forms extend towards the purple's edge, like the touch of rock against the atmosphere of my dream, past the barrier of darkest place and beyond.

Originator Notes

Art has the potential to be many things. Its essential quality is to attract the senses, but art can become far more. As well as making me feel, art encourages me to think.

I consider the title of this work The Thread and Reach of Life. I think of the threads of my existence, both physical and spiritual. Of my history and potential. The hollow threads that take oxygen and nutrients around my body and those that return to my heart. The threads of fibre that carry the world of the outside to my inside and fire one connection to another, that forms my reason, and transforms my imagination into my making...

I wrote about spider threads above as these symbolize something made yet intended not to be seen. A spider's thread is created to capture. Here I am seeking to capture my thoughts and feelings with this image.

I think of the myriad of ways we communicate through voice, and by this I think of voice not only as sound, but our voice on the page, in video, email, and text. I think of how these connect us, one to the other, and of the many ways we capture the thoughts and feelings of one another as an image, becoming more than voice, becoming song.

I end by alluding to a comet as it glances against the atmosphere of our world, that captures our attention with its flare of burning light in the second image above, an extract of the work at full size. I think of each living thing as a comet that lights up another's world, their thread and reach of life...
